As the invading fleet came ashore, Stiles to many precautions with the Yale papers. “Immediately, I sent off the College records.” said Stiles. The attack was not as bad as Stiles may have feared, even though the British out numbered the citizens that came to help the town in the attack. The British raiding, included Edmund Fanning—a Loyalist, but also a Yale graduate, Class of 1757. Fanning was used to convince the British not to burn down New Havens, unfortunately, Fairway and Norwalk were not as lucky. The next day the British fleet left, leaving 23 America patriots dead and 15 wounded. |
